New Player Guide

There are plenty of events in Maine to choose from, the problem is if you don’t live in the Portland, Bangor, Topsham, or Waterville areas, you may need to travel a bit to get to an event. The best way to stay up-to-date on events happening in Maine is to look at the Discords first, and the Facebook group secondly.
One of the most important things to learn first is the competitive ruleset. This essentially is the procedure for picking stages and characters, as well as which stages are legal.
No, you will be required to bring your own controller. Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers, as well as Gamecube Controllers are the most widely-used. Tournament setups are required to have a (preferably first party) Gamecube Controller Adapter, so there is no need to bring your own. If you choose to use a Switch Pro Controller, please disconnect your controller from the console after your match.
Press the Home button on your controller and head to System Settings. Scroll down until you see Controllers and Sensors, select that. Scroll to the bottom of that section and select Disconnect Controllers. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish disconnecting your controller.
Even if you turn your controller off after your match, you can cause interference to those playing on that console next if the controller accidentally turns on in your backpack, pocket, etc.
No time is better than the present! If you have the desire to compete, or just want to enjoy playing the game with like-minded gamers, the community will welcome you with open arms. 1 year, 1 month, 1 day; there’s no minimum time requirement to enjoy a tournament.
Typically there is an entry fee per event(Singles, Doubles Squad Strike, etc.) that goes toward the prize pool. 16 people paying $5 each results in an $80 prize pool, split among the top-placing entrants. The “venue fee” is to cover the cost of using the location hosting the tournament.
Some events, such as Elite Smash Series at Buffalo Wild Wings, don’t require a venue fee due to the increase in service provided by our group meeting up weekly. However, most Saturday events(aka “Monthlies”) are prime real estate, and can cost a pretty penny to rent the space. Tournament Organizers rarely make a decent profit off of running a Monthly in Maine, attendance is usually just enough to cover the rental fee.
The community tries to make events as safe of a space as possible. Any harassment beyond friendly trash talk is not encouraged and will be taken care of by the community leaders. In addition, all ideologies and backgrounds are welcomed by the community. There’s a fair number of LGBTQ+ members already present, you’re welcome no matter what you identify as. We only ask that you keep talking about politics to a minimum, these topics always find a way to get out of hand.
